Samsung to Launch Ultra-Slim Galaxy S25 Edge with 200-Megapixel Camera on May 12; Lenovo Reveals Glasses-Free 3D Gaming Laptop

Samsung will launch the Galaxy S25 Edge smartphone on May 12, featuring a 200-megapixel camera and a 5.85 mm thickness, making it the thinnest Galaxy S series phone. The device revives the 'Edge' branding and includes a flat 6.7-inch OLED display. Lenovo has unveiled the Legion 9i gaming laptop with a glasses-free 3D display, powered by up to an Intel Core Ultra 9HX processor and NVIDIA RTX 5090 GPU. The laptop supports 30 games and creative applications, initially launching in China with a North American release expected later.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: A New Chapter in Ultra-Slim Design
After months of speculation and teasers, Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S25 Edge will be unveiled during a virtual Galaxy Unpacked event on May 12. The device stands out not only for its name—reviving the "Edge" moniker—but also for its engineering, which emphasizes minimal thickness and premium materials.
At just 5.85 mm thick, the Galaxy S25 Edge is thinner than a USB-C port and significantly slimmer than its sibling, the Galaxy S25, which measures 7.2 mm. The phone weighs only 163 grams, making it one of the lightest flagship smartphones in its class. Despite its name, the S25 Edge does not feature a curved display. Instead, it sports a flat 6.7-inch OLED panel with 2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, framed by ultra-slim bezels.
Samsung has opted for a titanium and ceramic body, a combination that balances durability with a lightweight profile. The front and back are protected by Corning’s new Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, a material co-developed with Samsung to maintain strength while enabling the phone’s ultra-thin form factor. According to Kwangjin Bae, EVP and Head of Mechanical R&D at Samsung MX, the collaboration with Corning was essential to achieving the device’s structural integrity without compromising on design.
Camera and Performance: Fewer Lenses, More Megapixels
The Galaxy S25 Edge is equipped with a 200-megapixel main wide-angle camera, a feature Samsung has confirmed as part of its official specifications. This sensor is paired with a 12MP ultrawide lens on the rear and a 12MP punch-hole selfie camera on the front. While the camera setup is more minimal than the triple or quad-camera arrays seen on other Galaxy S25 models, Samsung emphasizes that the 200MP sensor delivers “pro-grade capabilities” in a compact form.
Under the hood, the S25 Edge is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset, a custom-tuned version of Qualcomm’s latest flagship SoC. It comes with 12GB of RAM, though storage configurations have not yet been confirmed. The device is expected to include a 3,900mAh battery, which is smaller than those found in other S25 models. Wireless charging support remains unconfirmed, and early reports suggest it may be omitted to preserve the phone’s slim profile.
Design Philosophy: Edge Without the Curve
The return of the "Edge" branding has sparked curiosity, especially since the device lacks the curved screen that defined earlier Edge models like the Galaxy S7 Edge. Instead, Samsung is using the term to highlight the phone’s design innovation—specifically its thinness and refined contours. The company describes the S25 Edge as “more than a slim smartphone,” positioning it as a showcase of precision engineering and minimalist aesthetics.
The phone’s dimensions are reported to be approximately 159 x 76 x 6.4 mm, rising to 10 mm at the camera bump. This makes it comparable in footprint to the Galaxy S25+ but significantly thinner. The in-display fingerprint sensor is present, though it’s unclear whether it uses the same ultrasonic technology found in the S25 Ultra.
Lenovo Legion 9i: A New Era of Glasses-Free 3D Laptops
While Samsung is pushing the boundaries of smartphone design, Lenovo is making waves in the laptop space with the launch of the Legion 9i, its latest flagship gaming laptop. The 10th-generation Legion 9i introduces a dual-mode display that can switch between a 4K 2D screen and a 1200p 3D screen—no glasses required.
The 3D effect is achieved using eye-tracking and lenticular lens technology, similar to what’s found in Samsung’s Odyssey 3D monitor and Acer’s Predator Helios 3D 15. Lenovo says the system will support 30 games and creative applications at launch, and it comes preloaded with Lenovo 3D Studio for content creation.
Under the hood, the Legion 9i is a powerhouse. It can be configured with up to an Intel Core Ultra 9HX processor and NVIDIA RTX 5090 GPU. Memory and storage options go up to 192GB of RAM and 8TB of SSD storage, respectively. The laptop also includes a 5MP webcam, a six-speaker sound system, and a comprehensive array of ports, including Thunderbolt 5.
Despite its cutting-edge features, the Legion 9i is not a lightweight machine. It weighs over 7 pounds and is notably thick, a trade-off for its performance and 3D capabilities. Lenovo has confirmed that the laptop will launch initially in China, with a North American release expected later in the fall. Pricing details have not yet been disclosed.
A Tale of Two Innovations
Samsung and Lenovo are each pushing the envelope in their respective categories. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge is a bold experiment in smartphone minimalism, prioritizing form factor and camera quality over battery size and feature density. Meanwhile, Lenovo’s Legion 9i represents a leap forward in immersive computing, bringing glasses-free 3D to a high-performance gaming laptop.
Both devices reflect a broader trend in consumer electronics: the pursuit of specialized, high-end experiences that cater to niche but growing demands—whether it’s ultra-portability or immersive 3D content creation.
