Chicago White Sox End Losing Streak with 6-2 Victory Over Miami Marlins Amid Marlins' RISP Struggles

The Chicago White Sox ended a four-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Miami Marlins at Guaranteed Rate Field. A pivotal three-run seventh inning, highlighted by small-ball tactics and Miami's pitching struggles, secured the victory. The Marlins continued to struggle with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-15 and leaving 11 on base. Andrew Vaughn and Lenyn Sosa led the White Sox offense, while Chicago's bullpen held firm after starter Bryse Wilson's solid performance. The Marlins have now lost 10 of their last 12 games, with ongoing issues in converting scoring opportunities.
Vaughn, Sosa Spark Offense as Chicago Capitalizes Late
After being outscored 19-1 in their previous two games, the White Sox (11-28) bounced back with a balanced offensive effort. Andrew Vaughn got things started in the second inning with a leadoff solo home run—his fourth of the season—tying the game at 1-1 after Miami had taken an early lead.
The White Sox briefly pulled ahead later in the second when Brooks Baldwin, who had been hit by a pitch, scored on a Michael A. Taylor double. That 2-1 lead held until the seventh, when the game was tied again by Miami’s Liam Hicks, who launched a solo homer off reliever Caleb Freeman.
But the tie didn’t last long. In the bottom of the seventh, Chicago sent nine batters to the plate and broke the game open. Josh Rojas led off with a single, and Lenyn Sosa followed with a double down the left field line. Baldwin then delivered a sacrifice fly to score Rojas and give the Sox a 3-2 lead.
The inning continued with Taylor drawing a walk, putting runners on the corners. Jacob Amaya executed a perfectly placed safety squeeze bunt, scoring Sosa. Max Meyer, who had been solid through six innings, then walked Miguel Vargas to load the bases and was pulled from the game. Reliever Ronny Henriquez entered and immediately walked Matt Thaiss on four pitches, forcing in another run and extending the lead to 5-2.
Marlins Waste Opportunities, Continue Downward Spiral
The Marlins (14-23) dropped their 10th game in the last 12 contests, and their inability to convert scoring chances was glaring. Miami went just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base. Despite collecting seven hits and drawing multiple walks, they failed to deliver in key moments.
Their lone offensive highlights came early and late. In the first inning, Xavier Edwards drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on a single by Jesús Sánchez. Hicks’ solo homer in the seventh briefly tied the game, but the Marlins couldn’t build on it.
Starter Max Meyer (2-4) was charged with five earned runs over 6 1/3 innings. He allowed five hits, walked three, and struck out five. His outing unraveled in the seventh, as he failed to retire a batter after allowing the first three men to reach.
White Sox Bullpen Holds Firm
Chicago’s bullpen delivered a solid performance after starter Bryse Wilson exited following five innings of one-run ball. Wilson allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out one. Jordan Leasure pitched a clean sixth, working around a double by Agustín Ramírez with two strikeouts.
Though Freeman surrendered the game-tying homer to Hicks, Cam Booser came in to record two key outs and was credited with his first win of the season. Brandon Eisert closed out the final 1 2/3 innings in a non-save situation, allowing no runs.
Sosa, Rojas Lead the Charge
Lenyn Sosa and Josh Rojas were instrumental in the White Sox’s offensive resurgence. Sosa went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Rojas reached base three times, scored twice, and was a constant presence on the basepaths. The duo combined for half of Chicago’s six hits and four of their six runs.
In the eighth inning, Rojas reached on a fielding error, advanced to third on Sosa’s single, and scored on a wild pitch to give the White Sox a 6-2 cushion.
Matt Thaiss, despite going hitless, contributed with two walks, an RBI, and his first stolen base of the season.
Marlins’ Road Woes Continue
The loss dropped Miami to 4-11 on the road this season. Their offensive inefficiency has become a recurring theme, particularly with runners in scoring position. The Marlins have now failed to score more than three runs in five of their last six games.
Despite a promising start to the game, including aggressive baserunning and early pressure on Wilson, Miami couldn’t sustain momentum. Their bullpen also failed to stop the bleeding after Meyer exited, with Henriquez and Cade Gibson allowing an additional run in the eighth.
